弟子规 dì zǐ guī
做一个好学生好子女应有的标准是
"Standards（2）for being a good student and child
圣人训 shèng rén xùn
中国古圣先贤所教导的。
Was taught by Chinese saints（3）and sages（4）of the ancient（5）past.
首孝悌 shǒu xiào tì
首先他教导你应该如何的孝顺父母以及尊重敬爱你的兄弟姐妹。
First, it teaches you how to be dutiful（6）to your parents, and how to be respectful（7）and loving to your siblings（8）.
次谨信 cì jǐn xìn
然后他教导你要如何在日常生活起居上对所有人、事、物的态度要保持小心谨慎，做一个有信用的人，要相信古圣先贤的教诲。
Then it teaches you how to be cautious（9）with all people, matters, and things in your daily life, and how to be a trustworthy（10）person. Do believe in the teachings（11）of the ancient saints and sages.
泛爱众 而亲仁 fàn ài zhòng ěr qīn rén
接着他教导你应该平等地爱护一切众生。亲近并向仁慈以及有德行的人学习。
Furthermore（12）, it teaches you to love all equally（13） ,
and to be close to and learn from people of virtue（14）and compassion（15）.
有余力 yǒu yú lì
当你把以上自己的本份都做到了，还有多余的时间和精力。
When you have accomplished（16）all the above duties,
则学文 zé xué wén
你才可以更进一步，学习研究文学艺术，来提升你自己的精神生活品质。
You can further study and learn literature（17）and art to improve the quality（18）of your cultural（19）and spiritual（20）life.

Chapter 1: 【入则孝】 rù zé xiào
第一章 ：在家要孝顺父母
Be Dutiful to Your Parents at Home.
父母呼 应勿缓 fù mǔ hū yīng wù huǎn
当你父母呼唤你的时候，要马上回答他们。
When your parents call you, answer them right away.
父母命 行勿懒 fù mǔ mìng xíng wù lǎn
父母亲命令你做的事，要赶快去做。
When they command（1）you to do something, do it quickly.
父母教 须敬听 fù mǔ jiào xū jìng tīng
当你的父母在教导你的时候，要恭敬的倾听。
When your parents instruct（2）you, listen respectfully（3）.
父母责 须顺承 fù mǔ zé xū shùn chéng
当你的父母亲有责备你，要顺从他们，承受他们的责备，努力改进自新。
When your parents reproach（4）you, obey5） and accept（6）their scolding（7）; try hard to change and improve yourself and start anew（8）.
冬则温 夏则凊 dōng zé wēn xià zé qǐng
冬天要使他们的身体感到暖和，夏天要让他们保持凉爽。
In the winter, keep your parents warm; in the summer, keep your parents cool.
晨则省 昏则定 chén zé xǐng hūn zé dìng
早上要跟父母请安表示你的关心，晚上要让他们睡的安稳。
Greet them in the morning to show them that you care. At night be sure that they rest well.
出必告 反必面 chū bì gào fǎn bì miàn
出门前要禀告父母，让他们知道你去了哪里，知道父母时刻关心子女。
回家后一定要先见父母，让他们知道你回来了，使他们安心。
Before going out, tell your parents where you are going, as parents are always concerned（9）about their children. After returning home, see your parents to let them know you are back, so they do not worry about you.
居有常 jū yǒu cháng
居住的地方要固定，生活要规律化。
Have a permanent（10）place to stay and lead a routine（11）life.
业无变 yè wú biàn
做事要有恒心，所立定的志向不要随意更改
Persist（12）in whatever you do and do not change your aspirations（13）at will（14）.
事虽小 勿擅为 shì suī xiǎo wù shàn wéi
事情虽小，但如果是不合情理的，不要任自己的意思去做。
A matter may be considered trivial（15）, but if it is wrong to do it or unfair to the other person, do not do it thinking it will bear（16）little or no consequence（17）.
苟擅为 子道亏 gǒu shàn wéi zǐ dào kuī
假如你任意的去做。你就不是一个孝顺的儿女，因为不合理不合法的事是父母不愿见到的。
If you do, you are not being a dutiful child because parents do not want to see their child doing things that are irrational（18）or illegal（19）.
物虽小 勿私藏 wù suī xiǎo wù sī cáng
东西虽小，不要私自收藏。
Even though an object（20）may be small, do not hoard（21）it.
苟私藏 亲心伤 gǒu sī cáng qīn xīn shāng
如果你私自收藏东西，你父母亲会感到悲伤。
If you do, your parents will be heartbroken（22）.
亲所好 力为具 qīn suǒ hào lì wèi jù
父母亲合情合理合法的爱好要尽可能的替他们准备好。
If whatever pleases your parents is fair and reasonable（23）, try your best to get it for them.
亲所恶 谨为去 qīn suǒ wù jǐn wèi qù
在合理的范围内，当任何人事物令你的父母亲感到厌恶，要谨慎的为他们除去。
Should something displease your parents, if within reason, cautiously keep it away from them.
身有伤 贻亲忧 shēn yǒu shāng yí qīn yōu
当你的身体受伤了，会使你的父母亲担忧。
When your body is hurt, your parents will be worried.
德有伤 贻亲羞 dé yǒu shāng yí qīn xīu
如果你的德行不好，你的父母亲会因此而感到羞耻。
If your virtues are compromised（24）, your parents will feel ashamed（25）.
亲爱我 孝何难 qīn ài wǒ xiào hé nán
你有爱你的父母亲，孝顺他们不是一件难事。
When you have loving parents, it is not difficult to be a dutiful child.
亲憎我 孝方贤 qīn zēng wǒ xiào fāng xián
但是如果你的父母亲憎厌你，你还是一样的孝敬他们，那才符合圣贤人
行孝的标准。
But if you are still dutiful to parents who hate you, only then will it meet the standards of the saints and sages for being a dutiful child.
亲有过 谏使更 qīn yǒu guò jiàn shǐ gēng
当你的父母亲做错了事，要劝他们改过。
When your parents do wrong, urge（26） them to change.
怡吾色 柔吾声 yí wú sè róu wú shēng
劝他们的时候，脸上的表情要和蔼，声音要放柔和。
Do it with a kind facial（27）expression（28）and a warm gentle voice.
谏不入 悦复谏 jiàn bú rù yuè fù jiàn
如果他们不接受你的劝告，等他们心情好一点的时候再劝他们改。
If they do not accept your advice, wait until they are in a happier
mood（29）before you dissuade（30） them again,
号泣随 挞无怨 háo qì suí tà wú yuàn
接着可以用哭的方法使父母亲感到觉悟，即使被父母亲鞭打，也不起怨恨的心。
followed by crying to make them understand why. If they end up whipping（31）you, do not hold a grudge（32）against them.
亲有疾 药先尝 qīn yǒu jí yào xiān cháng
当你的父母亲生病了，给父母亲吃的药，自己要先尝过。
When your parents are ill, taste the medicine（33）first
before giving it to them.
昼夜侍 不离床 zhòu yè shì bù lí chuáng
早晚都要照顾到他们，不要离开他们的床边。
Take care of them night and day; do not leave their bedside.
丧三年 常悲咽 sāng sān nián chāng bēi yè
替父母亲守丧期间的头三年，常思念父母亲养育之恩未报而感到悲伤。
During the first three years of mourning（34）after they passed away（35）, remember them with gratitude（36）and feel sad often for not being able to repay（37）them for their kindness in raising you.

孝顺父母没有做过头的，有的是我们没有尽力而为。‘孝’与‘不孝’一样在家族中传承。
居处变 酒肉绝 jū chù biàn jǐú ròu jué
这段期间内，家里的布置要有哀泣的气氛，避免游乐场所以及大吃大喝。
During this period you should arrange（38）your home to reflect（39）your grief（40）and sorrow（41）, avoid (42） festivities（43）and indulgence（44）in food and alcoholic（45）drinks.
丧尽礼 祭尽诚 sāng jìn lǐ jì jìn chéng
依礼来办理他们的丧事，用至诚心来办理他们的后事。每逢忌日，应至诚纪念。
Observe（46）the proper etiquette（47）in arranging their funerals（48）, hold the memorial（49）
ceremony（50）and commemorate（51）their anniversaries（52）
with your utmost（53）sincerity（54）.
事死者 如事生 shì sǐ zhě rú shì shēng
侍奉你过世的父母亲要如同他们在世的时候一样。
Serve（55）your departed（56）parents as if they were still alive.

Chapter 2:【出 则 弟】 chū zé tì
第二章在外做兄弟应有的标准原则
Standards for Being a Brother When Away from Home
兄道友 弟道恭 xiōng dào yǒu dì dào gōng
为人兄长的应该要友爱他的弟弟和妹妹，弟弟和妹妹应该要尊重敬爱他们的兄长。
Older siblings should befriend（1）the younger ones, and
younger siblings should respect and love the older ones.
兄弟睦 孝在中 xiōng dì mù xiào zài zhōng
兄弟姐妹们能和睦相处，就是孝敬父母。
Siblings who keep harmonious（2）relationships（3）among
themselves are being dutiful to their parents.
财物轻 怨何生 cái wù qīng yuàn hé shēng
当兄弟姐妹们知道重视同胞情义而不重视财物，他们之间不会产生怨恨。
When siblings value（4）their ties more than property（6）and belongings（6）, no resentment（7）will grow among them.
言语忍 忿自泯 yán yǔ rěn fèn zì mǐn
说话的时候要有耐心能容忍，忿恨的心自然就熄灭了。
When siblings are careful with words and hold back hurtful（8） comments（9）, feelings of anger naturally die out.
或饮食 或坐走 huò yǐn shí huò zuò zǒu
在吃喝的时候，或走路坐着的时候，
Whether you are drinking, eating, walking, or sitting,
长者先 幼者后 zhǎng zhě xiān yòu zhě hòu
要让长者在前面，幼者跟随在后。
Let the elders go first; younger ones should follow.
长呼人 即代叫 zhǎng hū rén jì dài jiào
当长者在叫唤一个人，立即要代他去叫。
When an elder is asking for someone, get that person for him right away.
人不在 己即到 rén bù zài jǐ jì dào
如果那个人不在，你马上要回来报告，并且代替那个人为长者服务。
If you cannot find that person, immediately（10）report back, and put yourself at
the elder's service（11）instead.
称尊长 勿呼名 chēng zūn zhǎng wù hū míng
称呼一位尊长，不可以称呼他的名，这是中国的古礼。
When you address（12）an elder, do not call him by his given name, which is in accord（13）with ancient Chinese etiquette（47）.
对尊长 勿见能 duì zūn zhǎng wù xiàn néng
在尊长的面前，不要卖弄自己的才能。In front of an elder, do not show off.
路遇长 疾趋揖 lù yù zhǎng jí qū yī
在路上如果遇到一位你认识的长者，要快速的向前跟他鞠躬行礼。
If you meet an elder you know on the street, promptly（14）clasp（15）your hands and greet（16）him with a bow（17）.
长无言 退恭立 zhǎng wú yán tuì gōng lì
如果他没有跟你开口说话，就恭敬的退立在一旁。
If he does not speak to you, step back and respectfully stand aside.
骑下马 miàn jìng lǐ
如果你认识的长者在路上走而你刚好遇到就应该停下脚步致敬问候。
Should you spot a walking elder whom you know, you should stop and pay respect（18）to the elder。
乘下车 chéng xià chē
如果是乘车，你应该要停下车来问尊长是否可以载他一程。
If you are riding in a carriage, you should stop, get out of the carriage, and ask if you can give him a ride（19）.
过犹待 百步余 guò yóu dài bǎi bù yú
遇到长者走过，你应该恭敬的在一旁站立等待，直到他走远了，你看不见时才离开。
If you meet an elder passing by, you should stand aside（20）and wait respectfully;
Do not leave until you can no longer see him.
长者立 幼勿坐 zhǎng zhě lì yòu wù zuò
当尊长还站着，你不要坐下。
When an elder is standing, do not sit .
长者坐 命乃坐 zhǎng zhě zuò mìng nǎi zuò
等长者坐下了以后，长者叫你坐，你才能坐。
After an elder sits down, you sit only when you are told to do so.
尊长前 声要低 zūn zhǎng qián shēng yào dī
在尊长的面前，说话的声音要放低。
Before an elder, speak softly.
低不闻 却非宜 dī bù wén què fēi yí
声音如果低的听不到，那也不是适宜的。
But if your voice is too low and hard to hear, it is not appropriate（21）.
进必趋 退必迟 jìn bì qū tuì bì chí
遇到尊长，要快速的走到他的面前，离开的时候，行动不要仓促。
When meeting an elder, walk briskly（22）towards him,;when leaving, do not exit in haste（23）.
问起对 视勿移 wèn qǐ duì shì wù yí
回答问题的时候，要正视着问问题的人。
When answering a question, look at the person who is asking you the question.
事诸父 如事父 shì zhū fù rú shì fù
侍奉你的伯叔或堂伯叔，要如同你侍奉你自己的父母一样。
Serve your uncles as if you are serving your parents;
事诸兄 如事兄 shì zhū xiōng rú shì xiōng
对待堂兄弟表兄弟要如同你对待你自己的兄弟姐妹一样。
Treat your cousins（24） as if they are your own siblings.
Chapter 3: 【谨】 jǐn
第三章 每日的生活行为要小心谨慎
Be Cautious（09）in Your Daily Life
朝起早 夜眠迟 zhāo qǐ zǎo yè mián chí
早上要比你父母起的早，晚上父母上床睡了以后你才能去睡。
Get up in the morning before your parents;
at night, go to bed only after they have gone to sleep.
老易至 惜此时 lǎo yì zhì xī cǐ shí
当你觉察到时间一去不回，一年一年的变老了，你就会格外珍惜目前的光阴。
When you realize that time is passing you by and cannot be turned
back, and that you are getting older year by year, you will specially（1）treasure（2）the present moment.
晨必盥 兼漱口 chén bì guàn jiān shù kǒu
早上起床之后要洗脸，要刷牙。
When you get up in the morning, wash your face and brush your teeth.
便溺回 辄净手 biàn niào huí zhé jìng shǒu
上完厕所，一定要洗手。
After using the toilet, always wash your hands.
冠必正 钮必结 guān bì zhèng niǔ bì jié
帽子一定要端正，衣服的钮扣要扣好。
You must wear your hat straight（3）, and make sure the hooks（4）of your clothes are tied.
袜与履 俱紧切 wà yǔ lǚ jù jǐn qiè
要确定袜子跟鞋子都整齐正确的穿在脚上。
Make sure socks and shoes are worn neatly（5） and correctly.
置冠服 有定位 zhì guān fú yǒu dìng wèi
把帽子和衣服要放在一个固定的地方。
Place your hat and clothes away in their proper（6） places.
勿乱顿 致污秽 wù luàn dùn zhì wū huì
不要把你的衣物乱放，这样衣物会被弄脏的。
Do not carelessly throw your clothes around, for that will get them dirty.
衣贵洁 不贵华 yī guì jié bú guì huá
穿的衣服要干净，是否华丽并不重要。
It is more important that your clothes are clean rather than how extravagant（7） they are.
上循分 下称家 shàng xún fèn xià chèn jiā
跟尊长或高位的人在一起，你的穿著要适合自己的身份和地位，在家穿着也要合乎家里固有的传统和习惯。
When with an elder or people of importance, wear what is suitable for your station（8）.
At home, wear clothes according to your family traditions（9）and customs（10）.
对饮食 勿拣择 duì yǐn shí wù jiǎn zé
在饮食方面，不要挑剔你的食物。
When it comes to（11）eating and drinking, do not pick and choose your food.
食适可 勿过则 shí shì kě wù guò zé
吃食物要适量；不要吃的过多。
Eat only the right amount（12）; do not over eat（13）.
年方少 勿饮酒 nián fāng shào wù yǐn jiǔ
你的年纪还轻，不可以喝酒。You are still too young and do not drink alcohol（14）.
饮酒醉 最为丑 yǐn jiǔ zuì zuì wéi chǒu
喝醉酒以后，丑态百出。When you are drunk, your behavior（15）will turn ugly.
步从容 立端正 bù cóngróng lì duān zhèng
走路的时候步伐要整齐稳重轻松;站立的时候身体要端庄正直不要歪斜。
Walk composed（16）with light and even steps（17）;stand up straight and tall.
揖深圆 拜恭敬 yī shēn yuán bài gōng jìng
拱手作礼时，身体要弯的深，手臂要圆。礼拜他人要有恭敬心。
Your bows should be deep, with hands held in front and
arms rounded. Always pay your respect with reverence（18）.
勿践阈 勿跛倚 wù jiàn yù wù bǒ yǐ
脚不可以踏在门坎上。不要倚靠在一只脚上站着。
Do not step on doorsills; do not stand leaning（19）on one leg.
勿箕距 勿摇髀 wù jī jù wù yáo bì
不要张开两腿或者是伸展两腿而坐。坐时身体的下部不要摇动。
Do not sit with your legs apart（20）or sprawled out（21）. Do not rock（22） the lower part of your body while sitting down.
缓揭帘 勿有声 huǎn jiē lián wù yǒu shēng
掀开门帘的时候要缓慢，不要出声音。
Lift the curtain（23） slowly. Do not make a sound.
宽转弯 勿触棱 kuān zhuǎn wān wù chù léng
转弯时要给自己空间，不要去碰到棱角。
Leave yourself room when you turn to make sure you do not bump（23）into a corner.
执虚器 如执盈 zhí xū qì rú zhí yíng
握着空的容器时要小心，要如同握着一个满的容器一样。
Hold carefully empty containers（24）as if they were full.
入虚室 如有人 rù xū shì rú yǒu rén
进入一个空的房间要如同进入一个有人在的房间一样。
Enter empty rooms as if they were occupied（25）.
事勿忙 忙多错 shì wù máng máng duō cuò
不要匆忙的去做一件事，做事匆忙会导致许多的错误。
Avoid doing things in a hurry. As doing things in haste（26）will lead to many mistakes.
勿畏难 勿轻略 wù wèi nán wù qīng lüè
不要怕担任艰难的工作，但也不要轻视及草率的去做一件容易的工作。
Do not be afraid of difficult tasks. Do not become careless when a job is too easy.
斗闹场 绝勿近 dòu nào chǎng jué wù jìn
避免去斗争或胡闹的场所。
Keep away from rowdy（27）places.
邪僻事 绝勿问 xié pì shì jué wù wèn
And do not ask about things that are abnormal（28）or unusual.
决对不过问不正常或者是平常不会发生的事。
将入门 问孰存 jiāng rù mén wèn shú cún
进入房子大门以前，要先问里面是否有人在。
When you are about to enter a main entrance, ask if someone is inside.
将上堂 声必扬 jiāng shàng táng shēng bì yáng
进入房间以前，一定要把声音提高，让别人知道有人来了。
Before entering a room, make yourself heard so that those inside know someone is approaching（29）.
人问谁 对以名 rén wèn shuí duì yǐ míng
若是有人问是谁，告诉他你的名字。
If someone asks who you are, give your name.
吾与我 不分明 wú yǔ wǒ bù fēn míng
回答〈是我〉，别人还是不能确定你是谁。
To answer "It is me" or "Me" is not clear.
用人物 须明求 yòng rén wù xū míng qiú
借用别人的物品，必须得到别人的许可才可以使用。
Before borrowing things from others, you must ask for permission（30）.
倘不问 即为偷 tǎng bú wèn jí wéi tōu
如果你不问，那就等于是偷盗。
If you do not ask, it is stealing.
借人物 及时还 jiè rén wù jí shí huán
借别人的物品，要按时归还给别人。
When borrowing things from others, return them promptly.
后有急 借不难 hòu yǒu jí jiè bù nán
以后你如果有急需，再向他们借就不会困难了。
Later on, when you have an urgent（31）need, you will
not have a problem borrowing from them again.
Chapter 4:【信】 xìn
第四章要做一个值得别人信赖的人
